At 日本語の庭, our mission goes beyond language learning; we also strive to provide social experiences that bring the richness of Japanese culture to everyday life. Recently, we organised a series of class outings that brought together language learning, Japanese traditions, and culinary adventures. It was a great experience, and we only hope our students enjoyed these outing as much as we did! We would like to express our appreciation to all the students who participated in making these memories with us, and really missed those who could not join us this time around.
During these outings, our students engaged in many fascinating discussions. We were struck once again by their passion and insights, and we were lucky enough to have our own minds broadened by their impressive knowledge of Japanese customs and culture. 皆さん、どもうありがとうございました!
One of the highlights of these class outings was the opportunity to indulge in the diverse and mouthwatering flavours of Japanese cuisine. Each class had a culinary adventure, as they chose their own venues to discover and savour unique dishes that captured the essence of Japan's gastronomic landscape:
Class Hoshoryu shared compelling discussions about their firsthand experiences of time spent living and working in Japan. Their unique insights and knowledge about Japanese society, customs, and daily life were captivating, and their passions really shone through in their stories, anecdotes, and deep understanding of the country. Be it traditional 和食 (washoku), everyday life in Japan, or socio-political landscapes, we were grateful for their valuable contributions and the opportunity to learn from their experiences. The beautiful sushi, gyoza, and nabemono made it all the more enjoyable.
Class Wakatakakage embarked on a day of feast and play, sampling treats from Mochi Mochi and How's Your Oni? alike, and finishing with a hilarious game of Samurai Sword. We always enjoy the humour and camaraderie, and, as per usual, the puns were in top form! These students even braved the culinary challenge of trying the beloved, but very salty, Japanese delicacy, 梅干し (umeboshi). With a mixture of curiosity and trepidation, they discovered the perfect way to enjoy these pickled plums; something we will remember going forward!
Class Takakeisho embarked on a flavourful journey with onigiri and takoyaki, popular street food delicacies. Some even ventured to panko their traditional onigiri, adding an extra layer of crunch to these おいしい rice balls. The shared laughter and friendship of the students showcased such a wonderful class spirit, and their mutual fearlessness in taking on challenges - be it the MEXT scholarship or the JLPT at the end of the year - is truly inspiring.
Class Hokutofuji and Kinbozan joined forces to engaged in deep discussions about various aspects of Japanese culture - from art and literature to immigration and etiquette - while sampling some beautiful 和食 (washoku). The nabemono may have set some bok choy ablaze, but the dish looked all the more impressive for it, and it was not alone in its deliciousness! For those students planning to immigrate to Japan soon, we wish you every success.
Classes Tobizaru and Ichinojo had a monumental feast at this all-you-can-eat sushi carousel. The revolving plates of fresh sushi made for an excellent backdrop as the students revelled in the communal atmosphere and shared their often hilarious stories and knowledgable insights. We only wish the rest of class Ichinojo could have made it; you guys were definitely missed.
Thank you once again to all who participated in these class outings and made them special! We look forward to organising more immersive experiences in the future, and to continuing this exploration of Japanese culture and language. Until our next adventure... じゃあまた。
