Extramural
We at Nihongo no Niwa believe that language learning extends beyond the classroom. Our extramural activities offer students the chance to engage with Japanese culture, connect with like-minded peers, and explore their passions in new and exciting ways. Whether through school-wide workshops and events or through regular club meetings, we create opportunities for students to explore authentic cultural experiences.
Welcome to South Africa’s first Shogi club, founded through Nihongo no Niwa! Our mission is to bring the classic Japanese strategy game of Shogi (将棋) to our local community, creating a space where enthusiasts and newcomers alike can learn, play, and grow together. Whether you're a beginner eager to learn the basics or a seasoned player looking for a challenge, our club offers regular meetups, workshops, and friendly matches where we explore strategies, improve our skills, and enjoy the rich cultural tradition of this beloved game.
If you love tactical thinking, friendly competition, and Japanese culture, we invite you to join us and experience the art of Shogi firsthand!
The Nihongo no Niwa Student Blog is a space where our students can express their passions, dive into Japanese topics that inspire them, and contribute their unique perspectives to our growing community. From personal reflections on learning Japanese to deep dives into history, pop culture, travel, and traditional arts, our student blog is a platform for creative expression and cultural exploration.

Want to contribute? Whether you want to share your love for anime, tea ceremonies, Japanese literature, or even your own journey with the language, this is your place to write, learn, and connect. Our blog is open to all students of Nihongo no Niwa, and we encourage you to bring your interests to life through writing!
NIHONGO NO NIWA ANIME CLUB
Our school's Anime Club is a space for students to explore Japanese language and culture through anime while connecting with fellow fans. Every month, we host online anime movie screenings, featuring a mix of classics, hidden gems, and modern favorites. After the screening, we dive into discussions about themes, language, cultural references, and more—all in a fun and relaxed environment!
Whether you're a seasoned anime enthusiast or just starting your journey, the Anime Club is a great way to practice your listening skills, learn new vocabulary, and engage with Japanese storytelling in an interactive way.
Join us for our next screening and be part of the conversation!
